Patients with arthritis or at risk of arthritis should consider shedding a few pounds if they are overweight or obese. The best remedy to reduce arthritis ailments is to lose weight, as this reduces the pressure on the joint, as this study points out.

According to Roy Altman, a rheumatologist and professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (United States) “People who manage to lose 10 to 12 pounds of weight (4.5 to 5.5 kg), can significantly improve all arthritis symptoms ”.

2. Exercise

Although arthritis pain can reduce performance when it comes to physical activity, it is very important to maintain a gentle routine that allows you to exercise your muscles and joints. Inactivity can make your arthritis problem worse and lead to more pain. For this reason, experts recommend doing low-impact exercises such as:

  • Walk daily.
  • To swim.
  • Riding a bicycle.
  • Stretching exercises.

And so this publication of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology points out.

Turmeric is a well-known spice that has become popular for its particular flavor and for its many medicinal applications.

Several investigations have determined that it can be of great help to alleviate arthritis and other ailments, since it has an important analgesic and anti-inflammatory action that can reduce these problems. The main benefits of turmeric are due to its active ingredient, curcumin, which is responsible for reducing inflammation and disease.

How to use it?

  • One of the options is to mix a teaspoon of turmeric with a tablespoon of olive oil and drink daily.
  • Another option is to dilute a quarter cup of turmeric in half a cup of hot water, so that it forms a kind of paste. This paste can be refrigerated and you should take a tablespoon daily on an empty stomach.
  • Finally, you can use it topically, preparing a turmeric infusion and applying it with cloths directly to the affected joints.

4. Arnica

Arnica can be used as a good topical remedy to treat inflammation and stiffness caused by arthritis.

In 2007, a study, published in Rheumatology International, revealed that applying arnica gel daily was as effective as ibuprofen gel, although neither treatment was compared to placebo.

How to use it?

  • The benefits of arnica can be maximized through its tincture. In fact, several conventional creams and ointments use the tincture as an active ingredient.
  • To extract the arnica tincture you simply have to crush the flowers. Mix 5 parts of the plant for one part of 70 proof alcohol. Once the mixture is formed, it is reserved in a dark place for 5 days and finally filtered to obtain the tincture.
  • To take advantage of the arnica tincture it is recommended to dilute a good amount in hot water and apply in compresses on the painful areas.

5. Cayenne pepper cream

Cayenne pepper

The active ingredient in this cream to reduce pain and inflammation is cayenne pepper. This hot pepper has an active compound called capsaicin, which is responsible for relieving pain and inflammation. Capsaicin has the ability to deplete a neurotransmitter called substance P, which is what sends pain signals to the brain.

This cream may cause a burning or stinging sensation when first applied, but it soon goes away. Instead of paying for expensive capsaicin creams, opt to make your own natural cream to reduce ailments.
