Empathy is a very useful social skill for living with our environment. Empathic people have the ability to put themselves in the other person’s situation and see things from their point of view.  Through this quality, we can connect deeply with those around us.

Although it is a unique ability of human beings, not all of us develop it easily. There are those who are very empathetic because nature, without the greatest effort. Others, on the other hand, need to work more to get to connect in this way.  Here we tell you the main characteristics of empathic people.

How are empathetic people?

Characteristics of empathic people.

1. They are attentive to what others tell them

Empathic people listen to every word in conversation. However, the difference between them and other people is that they listen with full attention.

An empathetic person will not listen to you just to respond, but they really care what you have to say.  Although it may seem somewhat unimportant, Listening carefully is a gift that you give to your interlocutor and it is a difficult skill to adopt.

Most of us don’t tend to pay real attention.  The most common is to listen to formulate an answer and debate;  the problem is that the connections we form with others are not always that strong.

Instead, empathic people will respond to what you say with their whole body.  It is easy to tell that they are attentive to your words by their gestures, their energy and their posture.

2. Empathic people value curiosity.

When we are little, they instill in us the idea that asking a lot is bad, but the reality is very different.  While it is true that there are things that should not be asked until you reach a certain degree of confidence, it does not mean that you should never ask anything.

Empathic people don’t believe in this paradigm. They are carried away by that curiosity they feel about customs, experiences and any knowledge that the person possesses. .

Actually, they are correct:  there is no better way to connect with someone than to ask them questions about their life and show genuine interest in everything they have to say.

Therefore, the next time you talk to someone, ask them about their interests, dreams and goals. This exercise will help you develop empathy, as it forces you to see reality from the other person’s perspective.

3. They test their judgments and opinions

Empathic people, when talking to someone who he does not share his way of life, he does not close himself to not listening, nor does he take his opinion for absolute truth.  Instead, listen, ask and question.

Empathic people understand that there is no single solution to everything and that everyone has their reasons. They are not interested in being right for their own sake; in fact, they prefer to debate and exchange opinions.

At the end of this whole process, it is not uncommon for them to change their minds or adapt their own a bit. But make no mistake: they don’t do this to make the other person like them.  If they ever change their opinions, it is because they really believe it.

To be more empathetic, try to talk to people who think differently from you on certain topics. Listen to their opinions and present your ideas.  The most important thing in this process is that you don’t try to convince anyone that your ideas are correct; just listen.

4. They measure their language

The language you use is as important as listening. Empathic people understand that the word is a weapon that can save or sink someone;  therefore, they take great care of what they say .

When they speak, they do so without judging, ordering, or pointing. Before even giving advice, they ask if they can give it.

Sometimes we don’t know the difference between helping and ordering. So when you’re talking to someone who is in a low mood, say phrases like “I can’t imagine that,” or “How can I help you?”  Thus, the person will feel that you really understand them and that you are not. judging .

5. They understand that each person should be treated differently

Empathic people understand that the saying “treat how you want to be treated” is not a rule, because not all of us like to be treated the same.  Being empathetic is putting pride and pride aside and accepting that there is more than one way to be right.

We must remember that we are all different and have different needs.   Sometimes, we cross someone out just for an attitude or experience, without thinking that they have a story that determines their reactions . Perhaps that experience is insignificant for you, but for another it can be of great emotional weight.

This does not mean that empathic people do not make decisions or do not say what they want. Quite the contrary: they explain what they feel or want, but with respect for their interlocutor.

With all these qualities in mind, do you think you are an empathetic person? Do you think it is important for people’s lives to develop this characteristic?
